So
You Want To Show Off Your Website eh?
If You Build It They Will Come - WRONG!
How could anyone come to your home if they don't know where you live? Just as you have a home address so your website must have an address. And just as having a home address, having a web address is useless unless people know what the address is and how to get there.
This is where advertising and promoting your site comes in to play. Some advertising and promotion are free services. Others require you to pay a fee. Whether or not you pay for the service depends largely on your available finances and how much you are willing to pay to spare yourself time and effort.
You could manually submit your site to each search engines, ( a daunting, time consuming task) or you could pay to have it done. Or, you could buy the software (like SubmitWolf) that automates the task making it easy to do it yourself while maintaining complete control over how it is done and when. Obviously the latter is the better choice unless you simply have no time at all and/or don't have a webmaster or other person to help you.
Then you have to periodically refresh your submissions by doing them again especially if you have made significant changes or additions to your site. Here again is the advantage of buying a product like SubmitWolf Pro which, as noted above, helps you by automating the task. Otherwise you have to either keep manually doing it yourself or
keep paying someone else to do it.
In addition to recurrent site submission to search engines you will also want to advertise your site. Again, you can either pay for it or do it yourself and again some ads are free and some you pay for.
The two most common are adding your site to directories and banner exchanges. One of the best ways to promote (advertise) your site whether it is personal, commercial or ministry related
is to add it to as many Directories as you can. Many of the directories also provide voting links.
Banner exchanges are also great and many are free. They usually show your banner a certain number of times for a certain amount of times other banners display on your site. Often it is 2-3 of theirs for each one of yours.
CAUTION: Be sure you are submitting to directories or exchanges that reflect your values. And DON'T take it for granted that because someone calls their exchange by a Christian sounding name, or even promotes it as Christian, that it always displays appropriate content. Free Sites Aren't!
Free sites are never truly free. You may not pay cash but you will always pay in terms of privacy not only for you but for everyone visiting your site. Free sites generally support themselves, and indeed are often set up to do so, by secretly harvesting information from from those who visit your site including any private information you collect in forms and email addresses.
Another thing they do is display ads which more often than not includes porn ads because the porn industry pays big bucks to get site operators to display their enticements.
Be sure you are submitting to directories or exchanges that reflect your values. And DON'T take it for granted that because someone calls their exchange by a Christian sounding name, or even promotes it as Christian, that it always displays appropriate content.
Case in point. I went with a "Christian" banner exchange when I first started out and just assumed the banners that rotate would be Christian. Unfortunately, the first time I saw one of their banners on my site it was a porn site. Their answer: They aren't responsible for the content other people put on their banners. Check
out everything you do carefully. If they give the "we aren't responsible" line, go somewhere else. On our sites we ask people to let us know if we miss something or if they see appropriate content so we can
remove it, not excuse it.
E-Commerce
Be careful who you do business with. Even secular businesses should be reasonable in their expectations especially when it comes to your ministry sites. Another case in point. I
first went with an E-Commerce company in California who offered great rates and had an reseller plan that would help me make money through referrals which they advertised would help pay the cost of my e-commerce processing. I carefully went over their site and asked the right questions. It wasn't until I went to join the affiliate program that I found the fine print that would have shut me done if I didn't accept their homosexual agenda.
